Let me say that one of the most appealing parts of running an air cooled VW is it's simplicity. Basic supplies and hand tools are all that's require to get you home if something breaks. If the alternator fails, you can still get home.

There is no need to run large water lines, a radiator upfront in direct air flow, etc. If you drive the Imp off road, running the water hoses underneath the pan can be problem source.

An inline engine will also require the body to be cut, something that I'm trying to restore myself. The Imp was designed for a boxer style engine, like the VW Type 1, Type 3, or Corvair.
